EndNote: Friend or foe?

I spent quite a bit of time earlier this week screaming profanities at my computer and threatening to throw it against a wall because I just didn’t understand how to use EndNote. The seminars at uni on how-to always seem to be booked out long in advance, and I just couldn’t get my head around how to use it. Then a friend helped me to do the most basic thing (i.e. get a style) and voila – suddenly the world makes SO much more sense! Everything is easier – I can merge libraries and dragndrop and all sorts of things. I’ve even just discovered that I can the gazillions of articles I find each day to the EndNote reference, as well as my notes, if they’re typed. AMAZING!

I’m not so sure I’d go as far as to say “I <3 EndNote” yet, but I’m feeling somewhat less animosity towards it than I was earlier in the week. Thank you, Carla.

PS, has anyone checked out Omnisio yet? I don’t really have time at the moment but it looks like it could be interesting, with the ability to leave comments directly on YouTube videos. Unsurprisingly, Omnisio has just been “acquired” by Google – the owners of YouTube – for some $15,000,000. Not bad for a bunch of Aussie geeks, hey?

  • Use WizFolio instead (www.wizfolio.com). A new reference manager much better than Endnote. If you are interested in technologies, then see for yourself in Wizfolio what web applications nowadays can do; it replicates the look and feel as well as the intuitiveness of windows explorer. You will certainly love it if you are using Endnote.

  • Hi Wilson,

    Hmm – but I’m on a Mac… I’m avoiding Windows Explorer-style convenience! ;)

I’ve had a look at wizfolio but it actually seems quite confusing to me. Where’s the help menu? It also looks largely geared towards science-based research.

I’ll have a further play with it and see whether I can get my head around it… but I dunno. I’m working out how to use EndNote more and more every day, and it does actually get much easier!

  • It’s not difficult to learn Wizfolio at all. You just need to know that your references are organized into folders just like on your email software. You can also right click, drag and drop, scroll, etc.

I think the help page is located at the bottom left corner. But I am not really sure whether their cite as you write tool supports Mac.

  • Help menu is at the bottom left corner. Yes WizFolio is very geared towards science research but you can still use it for other research. They have a bookmarklet which allows us to grab biblio data from various sites like amazon. I don’t know though whether their write as u cite tool supports mac os.

  • Hi, personally I find Endnote on the difficult side. I prefer Zotero and been trying out WizFolio recently.

I like how both of these software are free yet offer interesting options as compared to Endnote.

In fact, it seems WizFolio has a new version out with a cool ability to search the publishers website for PDFs for your collected references. I got some free PDFs this way.

I believe the help menu is on the bottom left. It’s the green circle.
